PHOENIX (BL 787-07) S$85

.
Red jasper stones in different shapes make up this necklace which boasts a carved soo chow jade pendant featuring a dragon on one side and a phoenix on the other. I purchased this pendant because I am fascinated by the intricate carvings on the stone and not because I'm inclined to 'believe' in the power or the folklore that accompanies 2 of 4 'magical' animals featured greatly in ancient Chinese legends. I just admire the artistry.

The early Chinese believed in four magical, spiritual and benevolent animals; the Dragon, the Phoenix, the Tortoise and the Unicorn. The Dragon was the most revered of all. In it’s claws it holds an enormous magical pearl, which has the power to multiply whatever it touches. The ancients believed the “pearl” symbolized the most precious treasure; Wisdom.
The phoenix of Chinese legend is a symbol of heaven's favour, virtue and grace, luck and happiness. It is worshipped as one of four spiritually endowed, sacred, creatures presiding over China's destinies. The four animals; dragon, tiger, unicorn (or deer) and phoenix are called 'si ling' in Chinese.

I live and I learn.
